Meet Zach, Charity Bib Athlete running for Bigger than the Trail
The Wander Project team is constantly inspired by the incredible stories of our Charity Bib runners, and Zach’s experience is another amazing journey we’d like to share. As someone who has faced challenges of addiction recovery and mental health, Zach chose to raise funds for our long time charity partner, Bigger than the Trail. They are a nonprofit dedicated to raising awareness and providing support for those struggling with mental health issues through trail running.
Zach’s has a deep and personal connection to this cause. “I myself have been challenged with addiction recovery and mental health challenges,” he shares. “Had it not been for the incredible care and assistance of those in the field, I would not be finding myself over 2.5 years sober and with great progression of my mental health needs as well.” Zach’s gratitude for the support he’s received has motivated him to give back, ensuring that others facing similar struggles can access the help they need.
Zach decided to run a half marathon as a charity bib at Vacation Races’ Shenandoah Half—an extra meaningful decision for him personally. “This will be my 4th Vacation Race, and I look forward to running it with my wife of 4 years come September 25th!” There’s no doubt that this will be a memorable experience for him with the physical challenge, giving back to a significant personal cause, and sharing the experience with his wife.
His fundraising journey has been rewarding in many ways. “It has allowed me to reflect on my own recovery and mental health and the many ways to utilize in helping others meet their own needs,” Zach explains. Through this experience, he’s had the chance to engage in meaningful conversations with family and friends about mental health, spreading awareness about the importance of the cause he’s supporting.
When we asked him to share tips to others considering a charity bib, Zach’s enthusiasm was clear. “I would cheer them on to find one that they support and work hard to find others to support their cause!”
Zach’s dedication to raising awareness for mental health and his personal journey of recovery are truly inspiring. As part of our community we hope you’ll cheer him on if you’re at the Shenandoah Half. If you haven’t already, subscribe to our enews to receive even more inspiring stories like Zach’s.
So proud of you Zach!
