—or Any Program You’re Passionate About

By: David Jackson, 2024 Wander Project Ambassador, Charity bib, & Runner

Ultra running is a sport like no other. Where else can you line up at the start of a race next to the very best in the sport—elite runners who are breaking records and redefining what’s possible? In no other sport do amateurs and professionals share the same stage. Imagine trying to walk onto the field during an NFL game—you’d be tackled and escorted out of the stadium before the coin toss. But in ultra running, this unique camaraderie creates a community unlike any other.

Because of this blend of amateur and professional athletes, ultra running operates differently from most other sports when it comes to business and marketing. Many companies have two types of teams:

1. Elite Teams: These include pro runners, fast runners, and those chasing the professional dream. They often receive compensation, gear, or a combination of both.

2. Ambassador Programs: These teams consist of everyday runners—people who genuinely love the product or organization and want to share their enthusiasm with the world.

Most ultra running companies are small, often founded by runners who identified a challenge, developed a solution, and decided to share it with the community. For example, UltrAspire creates innovative hydration packs and lighting systems specifically designed for the needs of ultra runners. On the nonprofit side, organizations like Wander Project focus on giving back. They offer charity bibs for iconic events like Vacation Races, TransRockies Run, Javelina Jundred, and exciting new races coming in 2025. These programs allow runners to combine their passion for the sport with a meaningful cause. (Insider tip: Join the list here to get updated when these events are opening for registration.)

My Experience as an Ambassador

I’ve been fortunate to serve as an ambassador for a few teams, and the experience has been nothing short of amazing. Sure, getting some free swag is great, but what I value most is the sense of connection and purpose. Being part of a team—representing a brand or cause you believe in—is deeply fulfilling. It’s a way to celebrate the inclusivity and community that ultra running fosters, making everyone feel like they belong.

But here’s the thing: it’s not just about joining any ambassador program. It’s about finding one that aligns with your values, one that inspires you to become a better runner and, hopefully, a better person.

Why I Chose Wander Project

In November 2023, charity became a significant focus in my running journey. Running wasn’t always my favorite thing—in fact, I used to hate it. But in January 2019, I had a crazy thought: I wonder if I could run one of these 100-mile races? So, I went out to run 10 miles. I managed just 3.5 miles that day, but I was hooked. Running became my greatest passion.

As my journey evolved, I realized I could use running to make an impact beyond personal goals. That’s where Wander Project came in. Their mission to inspire generosity and make the world a better place through running spoke directly to my heart. Wander Project’s charity bibs allowed me to combine my love for running with my desire to give back, creating a deeper purpose for every mile I run.

A Final Thought

Being an ambassador isn’t just about wearing a logo or promoting a brand—it’s about being part of something bigger than yourself. Whether it’s a product that’s improved your running or an organization that’s inspired you to give back, choose to represent something you’re passionate about.

For me, Wander Project has given me that connection and purpose. It’s made me a better runner, a more grateful person, and part of a team that’s making a real difference.

So, if you’re thinking about becoming an ambassador, ask yourself this: What inspires me? What makes me want to tell the world about it? That’s the team you should join, and trust me, the rewards will be far greater than you ever imagined.

Applications for the 2025 Wander Project Team are open until January 18th. Learn more here.
